Want to find out a little bit more about me? Well, you’re in luck because Theres A Book is hosting a weekly meme, called A Bit of Me(Me) so that those of us in the book blogging community can learn a little bit more about one another. If you missed it, check out my post about favorite movies from last week, and go to TheresABook.com to find out a bit more about whether all the other participants are animal lovers.
Veggies?!? Thought this post was about animals and whether I liked them or not – and it is, but my veggie love is one of the ways that I can prove to you how much I love animals. You see, one thing that you probably don’t know about me is that I’ve been a vegetarian for eight years. In addition to this, I’ve had a love for vegetarian food for at least five years more. While it’s more complicated than this, in part, my vegetarianism is because I have no desire to harm others, including animals. This is my choice, and of course, I stand behind it, but it might not be your choice, and I think that’s perfectly okay too. In fact, I stand behind your decision to eat however you choose to eat too – even my bf eats meat!
Now, am I an animal lover – yes! But what kind? Well, I’ve always had an affection for dogs, and we almost always had one when I was growing up. Moreover, up until recently, I was a little afraid of cats and their claws, having seen the damage they would do to my cousin. Add to that the fact that I was never really around many, and you would probably bet that I either have or want a dog.
In a perfect world, yes, I’d definitely have a dog, but my bf came with two cats, and as you might guess from the photo I took of them above, they are rambunctious “little” ones. My bf found Petite Folle (the one lying on her back in the photo above) on the street and thought that she’d just found her way outside from one of the apartments in his building, but she didn’t seem to recognize any of them. So he put posters around the city advertising a lost cat, and not one person claimed her. He hadn’t wanted her at the time, but in a few weeks of having her live with him, he couldn’t do without her, so I guess it’s all for the best.
While Golem (named as such because this once street kitty was sooo thin and starving when he found her that she looked like Golem from the Lord of the Rings movies) is a regular domestic cat, Petite Folle (which means little crazy one in French) is a Maine Coon. This breed is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, and Petite Folle is no exception, they are also one of the largest breeds. Think of it this way, if she stands on her back paws, she is maybe only a foot shorter than our kitchen counter! She is also the cute cat who starred on my blog last week when I interviewed Jill Murray for my site. Here’s that picture in case you missed it:
While I can’t say that she loves all YA books, I can verify that as she was reading Rhythm And Blues, I interrupted to ask if she liked what she was reading, and she meowed twice for “yes!” Now, how cute is that!
Other points worth noting: Golem is definitely the easiest one to love right off the bat. She’s so friendly and would always come right up on the couch to sit beside me – even when I first met her. She also does this cute thing where, she’ll only come up on the bed in the morning after I respond to her in cat speak. Hope you enjoyed my animal lover post and learning a bit of me!
