I didn’t even realize that The DUFF was getting made into a movie. I think, as far as Hollywood actresses go, Mae Whitman is a decent choice. But worry too about teens hearing that her body type is what one might consider a DUFF body-type… because she is NOT fat or overweight in anyway and those negative connotations being attached to her body type are not okay. But, at the same time, I actually did picture Bianca a lot like Whitman. I remember having the impression that Bianca wasn’t really very big – she only thought she was… I guess I’ll just be watching to see how this all plays out. I’m kind of divided at the moment.

Thanks for your comment, Sara! I have mixed feelings exactly like you do as I’m sure that you know from reading my article on it. I know that Mae Whitman could pull off the role, and I always wondering when a character sees themselves as fat if they actually really would qualify as such to most people, or if they’re someone with Mae Whitman’s body type. Either way, I could see it being true, but like you, I have the same issue with Whitman being considered the DUFF body-type, and I worry that it could have negative connotations for teens.

Melissa – Thank you for writing this article. I know this is a very late response, but I had to reach out to you. I totally agree. Mae Whitman is NOT fat nor is she ugly. I am so furious that she was cast as the DUFF. I deal with my own body issues (eating disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder) and so it was very tough for me to watch this movie and see a girl who doesn’t even look remotely overweight cast as an overweight person. I am just so confused by this movie.

Sorry for the late response to your comment, Roxanne! I didn’t see it until now, but I really appreciate what you said and hearing your perspective on this issue. For a long time I didn’t watch the movie because I loved the book so much, and I knew that it would be nothing like it. I only watched it when my boss mentioned that another book had a similar tone to the movie, when I did, I kind of saw that they were trying to do with the movie and the casting – to make everyone someone’s DUFF. But I still think it wasn’t right to cast someone like Mae Whitman for a role that was meant to be reduced to someone who was fat and ugly. It can definitely be confusing and harmful for people who already have body image issues.
