Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved fairy tales. (I was actually born on the same day of the year as Hans Christian Anderson, so maybe that has something to do with it?) Now that I’m an adult, I look for fairy tale retellings in all their forms: middle grade, YA, popular adult fiction or adult literary fiction. In other words, when Fierce In Press asked whether I’d be interested in participating in their YA cover reveal for the forthcoming novel, Kissing Frogs by Alisha Sevigny, I didn’t hesitate for a second.
If you haven’t read the original fairy tale, then take a few minutes and read “The Frog Prince” now to get ready for Kissing Frogs, a smart and funny retelling with an environmental heartbeat set in the lush and tropical El Valle de Anton.
In Sevigny’s novel, Jessica Stone is a popular high school senior with a secret: she was a nerd – a goody-two shoes, grade-skipping, all state spelling bee kind of nerd. But after giving herself the ultimate makeover and putting her academic genius toward studying and imitating the social elite, she now rules the school. She’s planning to head to the beach with her new, cool friends and her hot boyfriend until her bio teacher breaks the bad news: Jess is failing, and the only way to make up her grade is to join the conservation club in Panama on a trip to save the golden frog. Now she’s in a foreign country with her new social crew, including the one person who could destroy her new queen bee status. Travis Henley may have grown up, but he still likes playing the same childish games, like asking Jess for three non-dates in exchange for finding her ring at the bottom of the jungle pool. Hanging out with Travis more than she has to is the last thing Jess wants, but she agrees because it’ll keep him quiet. Soon she learns to value her inner nerd and realize that sometimes the ugly frog might really be her handsome prince in disguise.
With a cute synopsis like this one, is it any wonder that Fierce Ink Press gave Kissing Frogs an equally cute cover?
