Every Monday I tell you which books I received for review in a feature called What’s In My Mailbox?, and each week, I let you vote through the comments section about which book you believe I ought to read first. In this way, today isn’t exactly remarkable, but some of these books might very well be remarkable to you and I. Should I read the contemporary YA, the dystopian novel, or the paranormal selection first? Read further and then you can be the one to decide.
In Michael Williams‘ Now Is The Time For Running, readers will be introduced to Deo, who plays soccer in the dusty fields of Zimbabwe, and his older brother, Innocent, who cheers him on from the sidelines. Everything is normal…that is until soldiers turn up, forcing the two brothers to run for their lives out of their village and into the life of refugees. From the description, I can tell that the prejudice and poverty faced by refugees will come into sharp focus as Williams shows Deo and his mentally challenged older brother’s story of survival. While it may be a difficult read, this timely tale is one that I’m looking forward to checking out, if only to learn about the experiences of another country. Sound interesting? It’ll be available on July 5, 2011 all across North America.
As with Now Is The Time For Running, Little, Brown offered me the chance to review another book to feed my dark, dystopian obsession (and possibly to entice your own). Dark Parties tells the story of Neva, a 16-year-old girl, who has been locked in the Protectosphere since birth. In this isolated nation ruled by fear, xenophobia, and lies, the shield is meant to protect its citizens from the outside world, but at the same time, it traps them inside. Since Neva and her friend Sanna distrust the government’s suggestion that there is nothing outside the bubble, they stage a “dark party” to recruit people for an underground rebellion. Can Neva distrust everything she’s ever known, including those she loves, with every bit of truth she learns? Check it out for yourself on August 3, 2011 at your local bookstore or order it online in advance.
Finally, if you have read the first two books in the Wolves of Mercy Falls Trilogy, then you’re probably interested to see how Maggie Stiefvater takes the mess that is Sam and Grace’s lives from where they ended up in Linger to the conclusion on this paranormal series in Forever. In case you haven’t read the previous two books in the series, then I have no intention of spoiling them in this post, but I can say that the threat of wolves being hunted has always been there, but it’s become more pronounced this time around. Are you going to be rushing out for this one on July 12, 2011?
So which of these books would you rather I read first? Vote in the comments below, and remember, every vote counts!
